Ben Chilwell is expected to be missing until at least mid-December with a hamstring injury, football.london understands. The 26-year-old was forced off the pitch in Chelsea's 1-0 win against Brighton in the Carabao Cup last week and was pictured feeling his hamstring.
«I think it is bad news,» Mauricio Pochettino said last week on the injury. «The doctor told me it is not a good thing. It is a bad injury but we need to assess in the next few days and we'll see the period he is going to be out of the squad and the team. But I think it doesn't look good, the injury.»
Now, after scans took place, the Chelsea vice-captain is set to be missing for at least the next couple of months following his latest setback. Chilwell has had torrid luck with injuries over the past couple of seasons and missed 20 games last term with two separate hamstring problems.
Chelsea do have Marc Cucurella and Ian Maatsen as natural options for the left-back position. However, Cucurella has been deputising at right-back with Malo Gusto suspended and Reece James injured, while Maatsen's limited appearances have come further up the pitch.
Levi Colwill has spent the first part of the season at left-back despite naturally being a central defender. Colwill, however, has impressed there for the Blues – particularly in their 2-0 win against Fulham on Monday night when the England international played a fine through ball to release Mykhailo Mudryk to open the scoring.
So at left-back is one place in particular Pochettino has plenty of options. It is, however, another terrible bit of news for Chilwell, who earlier in the year spoke about the affect physical injuries had on his mental health.
