The lawyer of the Frenchman, Hugues Vigier, speaks out
Karim Benzema, according to his lawyer, Hugues Vigier, has complained that he has been drawn into a controversy for electioneering purposes, and that it is affecting his children because they see that «they accuse their father of being a terrorist», and denies the accusations that he is an Islamic fundamentalist.
In an interview with France Info radio station, Vigier charged against what he described as «hateful blackmail» by French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin, who challenged the footballer to deny what he had claimed about his links with the Muslim Brotherhood and his «selective indignation».
Darmanin said Thursday that if Benzema wanted to «show his good faith» he had to post on his social media a message condemning the jihadist attack on October 13 in Arra, in which a teacher was killed in his high school, just as he had shown his solidarity with the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, in the framework of Israel's offensive.
The athlete's lawyer replied that his client is not the one who has to show his good intentions, but the minister, who should have to «have the political courage» to admit that what he said about him is «false».
For Vigier, Darmanin's words last Monday in which he pointed out the alleged closeness with the Muslim Brotherhood, a fundamentalist movement banned in some countries, but not in France, have been «devastating» and have a «dramatic» impact for Benzema.
