Beth Mead insists Arsenal are ‘hungry’ to win the Continental League Cup final against Chelsea on Sunday, as they seek revenge for their mauling at Stamford Bridge in the League two weeks ago.
That 3-1 defeat effectively snuffed out Arsenal’s title hopes, and with Jonas Eidevall’s side having been knocked out of the Champions League and the FA Cup earlier this season, the League Cup is their only remaining chance of silverware in what can only be deemed an otherwise disappointing campaign.
The Blues, albeit with an injury-depleted squad, are in the running for a quadruple and victory at Molineux on Sunday would certainly get Emma Hayes’ swansong season well underway.
But it’s Arsenal who have the benefit of experience in this competition. Since the League Cup’s inception 13 years ago, the North London side have reached the final an astonishing nine times and lifted the trophy a record six, including a 3-1 victory in this very fixture last year.
Mead, 28, has won the WSL once and the League Cup twice since joining Arsenal in 2017. And the Euros Golden Boot winner is not underestimating the importance of this competition, even if it’s the least valued of the four Arsenal were in contention for at the beginning of the season.
‘This Arsenal team are hungry to win trophies,’ the Arsenal forward said. ‘Over the last so many years, we've not done that so consistently, but we're always hungry.’
‘And the Conti Cup final is the exact same. You want to beat Chelsea, you want to win games, and ultimately, that's what we'll be out to do. We would love to retain the cup again. Although it’s not always pretty, we always want to go out and win games.’
