Cole Palmer has offered his verdict on the penalty drama that ensued during Chelsea's 6-0 win against Everton. The Blues were already four goals in front, with Palmer bagging three of them, when a spot-kick was awarded following a foul from Abdoulaye Doucoure on Chelsea's star man.
Considering Chelsea were comfortably leading, Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson both wanted to take the penalty, despite Palmer still being on the pitch. The 21-year-old had converted all eight of his penalties so far this season and he understandably wanted to make it nine despite the score line.
After it initially looked as though Madueke was going to take it, Conor Gallagher pulled rank as captain and gave the ball to Palmer. The penalty was subsequently converted but Madueke looked far from impressed before he was later replaced by Carney Chukwuemeka.
Following the win, Palmer was asked for his thoughts on the penalty antics with it very clear to the 21-year-old why he should have and did take it. «Other players wanted to take it which is understandable with the game at 4-0,» he told Sky Sports. «But, I’m the penalty taker and I wanted to take it so in the end I took it.
»I think we just are just trying to show everyone that everyone wants to take responsibility and stuff like that. Maybe it was a bit over the top with the arguing and stuff, but everyone wants to win, help and stuff so it’s nothing major. We were laughing and joking about it. The gaffer has told us now."
