Chelsea's tough season looks even stranger after a wild injury stat showed just how big their issues have been.
Mauricio Pochettino is feeling the heat at Stamford Bridge with his Chelsea team currently sitting 11th in the Premier League table. A poor performance in extra-time of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool led to them being called 'billion pound bottlejobs' by Gary Neville after losing.
While the Blues' form has never been steady, the only constant in their season so far are the injury worries that keep piling up. Pochettino now has 12 first-team players either out with injury or doubtful for their crucial game against Burnley on Saturday.
After the international break, Carney Chukwuemeka, Trevoh Chalobah and Robert Sanchez were all added to the injury list which includes Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Romeo Lavia and Christopher Nkunku. The Blues' three latest worries mean they've had 47 injuries since pre-season started in July 2023.
This number seems even more unbelievable, yet it's true. Along with the fact that Chelsea have scored just 47 league goals this season, it amazingly means they've had as many injuries as they've scored league goals, reports the Daily Star.
Chelsea's goal-scoring form has been a bit shaky, especially with Nicolas Jackson missing some big chances this season. However, Pochettino's team have still managed to score more goals than Wolves, Brighton and Hove Albion, West Ham and Manchester United, who are all higher in the league table.
Looking ahead, Chelsea have a favourable run towards the end of the season. They will be playing against four of the bottom five teams — Burnley, Sheffield United, Everton and Nottingham Forest.
