Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has shared his thoughts on where the Gunners went wrong in their Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich. A decisive 63rd-minute header from Joshua Kimmich was the blow that saw any hopes of reaching the Champions League semi-finals crumble for the north London side.
Despite a more defensive solidity displayed in Munich compared to their earlier 2-2 draw at the Emirates, a momentary lapse in concentration allowed Kimmich to explode an opportunity into a goal past an unguarded David Raya. Fingers particularly pointed towards Gabriel Martinelli, who seemed to have switched off, let Kimmich slip through, and deal the fatal strike to Arsenal.
Supporters may have been hoping for an immediate comeback from Mikel Arteta's side, anticipating significant pressure exerted on the hosts' defence. The anticipation, however, was met with disappointment as several quiet minutes passed, finally spiralling into a panicked ending highlighted by hasty decisions around a quick free-kick that unfortunately backfired, reports the Mirror.
Keown, during his post-match analysis with TNT Sport, remarked: «It was very disappointing and it was kind of summed up in the end there. (Bukayo) Saka for some reason takes a really free-kick when there's an opportunity to really test the goalkeeper right at the end.
»They were quite flat within the game and there was no real urgency in the closing stages. Hugely disappointing. We didn't really lay a glove on them in the second tie. It was there for whoever wanted it. I think Bayern came out with that extra resolve, were more direct and they posed more of a threat than Arsenal did."
