Everton have been docked 10 points after breaching Premier League financial rules, the English top flight announced on Friday. The punishment, the biggest sporting sanction in the competition's history, leaves Everton 19th in the table.
Moreover, the Toffees will also face a billion-dollar lawsuit. According to the 'Daily Mail', Burnley, Leeds United and Leicester City are to meet on Friday to make a joint claim for £300m in damages.
It all started in the summer, when speculation began about a possible Premier League sanction on Everton for flouting spending rules. At the time, both Leicester City and Leeds United, who had just been relegated to the Championship, threatened to sue the Liverpool club.
All three clubs have expressed their disappointment that the sanction did not come out last campaign, but this season. Had it taken place in the 2022/23 season, the Toffees would have been relegated with 26 points, instead of the 36 they finished with, and Leicester would have been saved.
