Chelsea have once more been told that they need to dip back into the transfer market in order to improve despite spending much of the past 12 months trading players. Having effectively replaced the entirety of their squad inside three windows, the Blues still look short in certain areas.
Under Mauricio Pochettino they have failed to start a season like a team that has had over £1billion worth of new players added and the struggles in front of goal has left them widely criticised for sporadic spending. Now, despite being on their best run of form of the season and since March, the issues still exist according to Gary Neville.
“They’ve got a lot of talented young players," the former Manchester United full-back said on his Sky Sports podcast on Sunday. «The question mark will be centre forward and experience I think, if Thiago Silva something happens to him, replacing him.
»Chelsea are not far awayif they got a centre forward and a centre half even though they spent a billion quid, they still need two players.”
The Blues have recorded three straight wins in the run up to the international break, beating Brighton in the cup and then Fulham and Burnley away in consecutive league matches. It still leaves Pochettino in a disappointing 11th place after eight games but just two points from Newcastle in eighth.
So far, despite lavish fees being forked out for attacking players across the group, it is the defence that has been the most impressive aspect of the team. Pochettino's side boast the joint second best record in the league so far and have conceded less than top of the table Tottenham.
