British sporting icon and former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray has waded in on the debate surrounding Arsenal defender William Saliba's handball in their 2-2 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last night.
The French international was attempting to defend a cross early on in the first half when Blues winger Mykhailo Mudryk beat him to the ball, with his header flicking onto Saliba's outstretched arm. Referee Chris Kavanagh did not initially award Mauricio Pochettino's side with a penalty but was told by VAR to go and check the situation on the pitch-side monitor.
Kavanagh didn't take long to make his mind up and pointed to the spot, from which Chelsea's final signing of the summer Cole Palmer stepped up and fired home to give them an early lead. The Blues would double their lead just two minutes after half-time when Mudryk caught Gunners goalkeeper David Raya napping off his line and floated home a fantastic chip into the back of the net to the rapture of the Matthew Harding Stand.
However, a crucial mistake from Robert Sanchez and Conor Gallagher saw Declan Rice manage to claw Mikel Arteta's side back into the game with a long-range curling effort that completely swung the momentum of the match. With the Blues on the back foot, Arsenal struck again just a few minutes later, this time through Leandro Trossard who converted Bukayo Saka's cross at the back post.
Despite the Blues throwing away a 2-0 lead in a game in which they'd looked so comfortable in over the first 75 minutes, it wasn't the main talking point at full-time. That turned out to be the handball decision given against Arsenal for Palmer's penalty, with many taking to social media to vent their frustrations.
