The Football Supporters' Association (FSA) have revealed that a request has been made to the Premier League to 'reverse' the decision to play matches on Christmas Eve after Chelsea's away trip to Wolves was moved to December 24. The game was originally scheduled for December 23 but for the first time in nearly 30 years there is now set to be Premier League action the day before Christmas.
It was reported earlier this season that the change was being considered by the league but last week the decision was made official, leading to waves of fan backlash and protest. The Chelsea Supporters' Trust (CST) voiced their frustrationwhilst the FSA said it was 'shocking.'
Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino also spoke out in opposition of it. «Our fans are not happy? Me neither,» he said. «I’m not happy also because the 23rd is my anniversary and I need to travel to Wolves, and I am not going to spend the night of 23 in my house. Then the 24th for Argentine people is a really important night and I hope to arrive in time to celebrate.”
He also added that he hoped it would be a one season thing, continuing: “It is difficult because I think it is not easy to change. We need to accept, we are in England and it is different to the rest of the world, but I need to adapt myself and even if I am not happy I need to do my best.”
However, despite calls from the CST to overturn the decision it doesn't look to be forthcoming with Chelsea confirming on Monday that they would be providing free coach travel to Molineux for those that have a ticket. »The club is aware that transport options are more limited than usual on this date, as it is a Sunday and also Christmas Eve," a statement reads.
