Emmanuel Petit has slammed Alan Shearer for his criticism of Nicolas Jackson. The 22-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Villarreal in the summer for around £30million, has struggled to find the net so far this season with many already urging Mauricio Pochettino to sign a new striker in January.
Jackson has featured nine times for the Blues in the Premier League, picking up more yellow cards (five) than he has scored goals (two). Following Chelsea's defeat to Brentford last weekend, the Senegal international was subject to criticism from Shearer, who was disappointed with the forward's performance.
Speaking on Match of the Day, the former Newcastle United striker said: «To be more prolific you have to get yourself into scoring positions. There was a complete lack of movement from him today. Sometimes you have to make the run for the defender and for yourself.
»He looks very raw and at times unsure what to do. He's just waiting for something to happen, you have to do it yourself sometimes. You've got to work, you've got to make defenders work, you've got to try to pull them around.
«Goalscorers don't hang around at the edge of the box like he does. He's got to accept that the ball comes in, it's his job to get on the end of it. They were never, ever going to score today with that. It looks as if he needs a lot of help in that position.»
When Pochettino was later quizzed on Shearer's harsh assessment of Jackson, the Chelsea manager leapt to the defence of his striker and claimed that his words were 'dangerous' in an interview with the Mirror. Now, in an interview with OLBG, Petit has also slammed the MOTD pundit for his analysis.
