Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has bemoaned the amount of waiting around after Cristian Romero's red card against Chelsea as the defender was sent off in the first half of an enthralling London derby. The Australian, who has been vehemently against VAR in public, continued his stance on this topic without throwing his men under the bus.
Romero first found himself in trouble before even the moment that he brought down Enzo Fernandez inside his own box to hand Chelsea a way back into the game. After Raheem Sterling's disallowed goal in the 20th minute Romero was the focus for a kick on Levi Colwill off the ball.
VAR looked at that incident but didn't give any extra punishment for the lash out. Romero was back in the spotlight again soon after though following confusion over what looked to be Moises Caicedo's equalising goal at the time. The Ecuadorian had his strike ruled out with Nicolas Jackson blocking Guglielmo Vicario's vision from an offside position but in the build-up Romero had gone in hard and above the ball on Fernandez.
«He's a physical guy, it's a part of his strength,» Postecoglou said of the incident. «Today it was deemed he went too far. We just had to cop it.» After a weekend of dramatic and controversial VAR calls the Spurs boss continued his own take on the system.
«I think it's going to become the norm [waiting for decision], it's how we're going to have to watch and participate in football. I've said before I don't like it, I don't like the standing around, I don't like the theatre of it,» he explained. «In my 25 years, I've always accepted the referee's decision, and I've had some shockers, and shockers my way too.»
