Piers Morgan has been left with egg on his face following Arsenal's defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend. The television personality backed Mikel Arteta's side to win the Premier League title at the start of April after climbing to the top of the table.
As the Gunners cruised past Brighton at the Amex Stadium, winning 3-0, Manchester United held Liverpool to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford. With the Merseyside outfit dropping points, Arsenal claimed first place and a nine-goal difference separated the two clubs.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter after the game, Morgan wrote: «That was Arsenal’s best performance this season, and the bar was high. Arteta’s built a team that’s scored the most Premier League goals, conceded the fewest, and plays with strength, flair, fight and a steely resolve we lacked last year. We won’t choke again.»
After losing to Aston Villa a week later, while Manchester City stormed past Luton Town and Liverpool lost to Crystal Palace, the north Londoners dropped to second. Despite Pep Guardiola's side boasting just a two-point lead, Morgan believes that Arsenal have choked in the title race.
«FFS. We’ve choked again. Unbelievable,» posted the 59-year-old on X. «Arsenal’s lack of a proper striker has come back to haunt us. So many chances in first half, but none taken. If Watkins was playing for us, we’d have won this 3-0.»
Morgan later insisted that Arsenal could've have done with Cristiano Ronaldo this season. He added: «I think @Cristiano would score 25+ goals a season in our team with the service he’d get. Arteta’s refusal to prioritise a top striker is his one major blindspot.»
