Cole Palmer is firmly in the mix for the 2023/24 Premier League Golden Boot after his late heroics in Chelsea's thrilling 4-3 win over Manchester United. Going into the game in confident mood after netting four goals in his last three appearances for the Blues, Palmer took his tally to 19 goals in 36 games for his new club with his first senior hat-trick.
Confidently scoring his first of the evening from the penalty spot in the 19th minute, the England international then had to wait until the tenth minute of second-half stoppage time for his second after Chelsea were awarded another spot kick right at the death. That wasn't the end of the drama, however, as there was still time left for Palmer to complete his treble after his low shot took a deflection off Scott McTominay and found the back of the net.
It was an incredible ending to the match in west London and another 90 minutes where Palmer demonstrated what a talented player he is. Chelsea haven't got a lot right in the transfer market over the past couple of seasons but the acquisition of the 21-year-old has proved to be a masterstroke.
Palmer's treble now means he is on 16 Premier League goals for the season, with his former Man City teammate Erling Haaland two ahead of him in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot. Perhaps an outside bet for the top award prior to the Manchester United match, the attacker could well spring a surprise in what remains of the season with the Blues having nine Premier League fixtures left to play.
