FootballThe tournament started in 1916 as Campeonato Sudamericano De Futbol. It was initially set as a celebrationof Argentina's 100th independence anniversary.
The initial participants were Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil. Uruguay won the inaugural title. The day after the tournament, South America's football governing body CONMEBOL was formed.
The tournament was officially rebranded to Copa América in 1975. The 2016 edition represented the 100th anniversary of the tournament and was named the Copa América Centenario.
