Cork football great Miah Dennehy, one of Leeside's most loved footballers, has died aged 73 after a long illness.
Dennehy was a key figure in the successful Cork Hibernians team of the early 1970s, playing under manager Dave Bacuzzi.
He scored twice in a playoff with Shamrock Rovers to help Hibs win the League of Ireland title in 1971. And most famously scored the first FAI Cup final hat-trick as Hibs overcame Waterford United in 1972.
In 1973, he joined Nottingham Forest for a fee of £20,000, establishing himself as a first-team regular under manager Dave Mackay, before losing his place under Brian Clough.
He went on to play cross-channel for Walsall, Bristol Rovers, Trowbridge Town and Cardiff City before returning to the League of Ireland in 1980 with Cork United.
When that club was expelled from the league in 1982, he played for Thurles Town, Waterford, Limerick, Drogheda and Newcastle West and his love of the game was such that he later returned to junior soccer with Village United in the Cork AUL, serving as player-manager at 51.
He also coached junior soccer teams and played hurling for St Vincent's GAA Club.
Between 1972 and 1977 Dennehy made 11 appearances and scored two goals for the Republic of Ireland. His last cap came as a substitute for Mark Lawrenson against Poland in 1977.
He is survived by wife Caroline and children Kristian and Chelsea.
