The 31-year-old, who was named in Gareth Southgate's England squad on Thursday ahead of next week's international break – is nursing a hamstring injury sustained in the Magpies' 2-0 away defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Wilson has made an impressive start to the 2023-24 campaign, scoring seven goals in 10 Premier League appearances, including four in his last four away games.
However, Newcastle's No.9 – who missed three games in September with a hamstring problem – has emerged as a major doubt with the same issue for this weekend's trip to the Vitality Stadium.
Providing an update on Wilson at a press conference on Friday, Howe said: «Callum has a tight hamstring. We are doing various tests on him.
»We will see how he does this morning before making a decision on the game. Other than that, we have no fresh injuries from the other night."
Wilson is the latest name to be added to a growing injury list for Newcastle, which includes Alexander Isak and Sven Botman who have both shown signs of progress in their recovery from respective groin and knee problems.
«Alex [Isak] is doing well and is working on his fitness levels,» said Howe. «We are building up his load and the plan is for him to return after the international break.
»No massive news on Sven [Botman] – he is progressing well, (and) he has been away in Holland getting specialist treatment. I think he's back here today so I will chat with him and see how he is getting on."
