England and Manchester United women’s goalkeeper Mary Earps has been named BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year.
The Lionesses no.1 and World Cup runner-up beat Stuart Broad, Frankie Dettori, Alfie Hewett, Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Rory McIlroy to the gong at the ceremony in Salford.
Earps was England’s stand-out performer at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in August, even saving a penalty in the final, which Spain won 1-0.
Outside of that tournament she won the Finalissima and Arnold Clark Cup, while she was also an FA Cup runner-up with United.
The Sports Personality Award is just one of a number of individual awards the 30-year-old has collected this year, including The Best FIFA Women's Goalkeeper award in February for her Euro 2022 winning heroics.
Off the pitch, Earps showed her character by pushing Nike to stock her England shirt after an oversight by the sporting giants left young fans unable to don her no.1 kit.
That error was corrected in December, with Earps' green long-sleeved shirt selling out in five minutes.
The 70th edition of the award saw the Nottingham-born star beat a top three of England cricket star Broad and Team GB heptathlete Johnson-Thompson.
