Ian Ladyman has revealed he was pleased England lost to Brazil on Saturday night - insisting the Three Lions could do with a 'reality check' ahead of Euro 2024.
Gareth Southgate's side suffered their first defeat since the 2022 World Cup against the Selecao, with 17-year-old Endrick netting a late winner at Wembley to give the South Americans a 1-0 victory.
Despite having more possession and plenty of endeavour, England couldn't find the necessary quality to get back into the game, with Brazil's tenacity helping to ensure Dorival Junior won his first game since taking over.
The loss was England's first at Wembley since 2020 and it raised some concerns for the Three Lions ahead of Euro 2024.
But Ladyman, speaking on Mail Sport's It's All Kicking Off podcast to co-host and former Premier League winner Chris Sutton, insisted Saturday's defeat could actually prove to be a blessing for England ahead of this summer's tournament in Germany.
'England lost to Brazil 1-0, and part of me is a little bit glad about that, which sounds weird,' he said.
'I just think when you're on a run-in to a major tournament, things can get you - complacency, over-confidence, hype.
'I'm not accusing any of those players from being complacent or over-confident, but there is a bit of hype about. That's not their fault, but I just think that when you have a little setback it levels everything off.
'It just dampens down everything and allows them to just carry on and prepare and build.
'Don't get me wrong, I don't want them to lose the last two friendlies before they go off to Germany, I absolutely don't, but at the moment, a little reality check does nobody any harm.'
While Sutton didn't feel it could be viewed as a positive that England lost, he admitted
