Mason Mount will have to wait to play in front of the Stamford Bridge crowd once again as he starts on the bench for Manchester United tonight against Chelsea.
The 25-year-old left the Blues last summer in controversial circumstances, joining the Red Devils for a fee believed to be in the region of £60million. Mount has spent the majority of his career at Old Trafford out of the side thus far with a calf injury but returned recently – and scored his first goal for the club in the draw away at Brentford at the weekend.
However, that was not enough to earn him a place in United's XI this evening with Erik ten Hag set to use Mount from the bench instead. In attack, Marcus Rashford drops out with Antony his replacement this evening alongside Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho, who will be used behind striker Rasmus Hojlund.
Ahead of the game, Ten Hag was asked about Mount's move to United and the Dutchman was insistent that Chelsea wanted to keep hold of the England international. «I don't think they wanted to sell him,» the United boss said on Mount.
«They wanted to keep him and offered him a new contract many times. But he wanted to make this step. We are very pleased he is a Manchester United player because he has great abilities and will contribute to become a big player for Manchester United.»
As for Chelsea, Mauricio Pochettino has named an unchanged side from the team that drew at home to Burnley on Saturday afternoon. Trevoh Chalobah returns to the squad but Benoit Badiashile gets the nod in the XI, while Raheem Sterling remains on the bench, with Mykhailo Mudryk starting back-to-back Premier League games.
