Erik ten Hag has revealed what he said to Kobbie Mainoo after their Carabao Cup final with Newcastle in February 2023.
Manchester United ended their six-year wait for silverware as they beat Newcastle United 2-0 to win the Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium.
Casemiro scored the opening goals for the Red Devils before Marcus Rashford doubled their lead before the break.
United fans saw Ten Hag and Mainoo sharing a special moment pitch side after the game and wondered what was said.
Ten Hag has now revealed what he said to the 18-year-old star, who was watching the game from the stands.
He said: 'You remember that? Good. I remember as well. I said your day will come and we're going to win trophies together..'
The 18-year-old made his England senior debut against Brazil last Saturday before a man-of-the-match display against Belgium on Tuesday night.
But Mainoo began feeling unwell earlier this week and sat out Manchester United's training session on Thursday afternoon.
He did report for training at Carrington on Friday and Ten Hag will make late decision on his involvement at the Gtech Community Stadium.
On Friday, when asked his availability Ten Hag said: 'I don't know, we hope. Today he is here, not fully recovered but we still have many hours before tomorrow with kick off at 8pm.'
The midfielder has made 14 appearances in the Premier League this term and scored a crucial last-gasp goal in United's dramatic 4-3 victory away to Wolves last month.
Mainoo's meteoric rise continued with his first appearances for the England senior side during the international break, and Ten Hag said that he and his coaching staff will keep the teenager's feet on the ground in the unlikely event that success goes to his head.
