Everton flop on verge of historic double seven months after club sanctioned exit
Salomon Rondon has secured silverware eight months after leaving Everton.
The striker, who departed by mutual consent in December, won the Argentine title with River Plate over the weekend. Rondon scored three goals in 15 appearances in the Primera Division, which his side clinched with a 3-1 win over Estudiantes.
The weekend’s results meant the Buenos Aires based side were crowned champions with two games to spare. Closest rivals Talleres Cordoba secured an away win at Huracan but could not close the seven point gap and keep the title race open as River Plate also picked up three points.
Rondon left Everton ahead of the January transfer window in a move that appeared to have been designed with an expectation new attacking players would arrive on Merseyside. He had struggled to earn the trust of Frank Lampard, who was reluctant to start him up front at the start of last season despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s knee injury leaving Everton without a fit senior striker before the arrival of Neal Maupay.

With Rondon suspended for the season opener with Chelsea due to his red card against Brentford the season before, Anthony Gordon started up front and remained there for the following weeks.
Following River Plate’s success, Rondon wrote on social media: “Very proud to secure my first league title with @riverplate and the second of my career. Thanks to those who always believe!”
