Everton lodge appeal against new Premier League points deduction

Everton have formally lodged an appeal against the two-point deduction handed down last week.

The Blues made clear that preparations to challenge the verdict, which imposed a second points sanction on the club this season, were underway in the immediate aftermath of that judgement.

The club had argued it should not receive any further deduction during this campaign during a three-day hearing in March. The Premier League argued for a five point penalty - an opinion the independent commission ruling on the case shared before it reduced it to two due to mitigating circumstances.

That punishment was revealed last Monday and took the total number of points removed from Everton for breaches of Premier League spending rules to eight. As a result, the club has been thrown into what this season’s performances suggest is an undeserved relegation battle.

The Blues enjoyed success when they appealed a 10-point penalty - the first of its kind - for breaking league profit and sustainability regulations following a hearing in October. An appeals panel found legal errors in the handling of the first case and dropped the penalty to six points.

Everton will hope for similar progress this time, having landed several blows against the Premier League’s case last month. They included recognition of the specific impact of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia on the club’s finances and technicalities over the club’s approach to the hearing - the commission heavily criticising Premier League claims the Blues had been uncooperative during the process.
