Ex-Everton chief executive blasts Richard Masters after Man City Premier League charges update

Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness has criticised the Premier League’s handling of financial cases, claiming “it seems to be one rule for the big boys and another rule for those below them”.

Wyness made the claim after league chief executive Richard Masters provided a cryptic update on the investigation into Manchester City. Masters recently told the European Leagues General Assembly “a date has been set and the case will resolve itself at some point in the near future”.

While he acknowledged the allegations faced by City were not the same as those that Everton and Nottingham Forest have already answered to, Wyness argued the title-chasers were receiving a different approach.

City have been hit with 115 charges under Premier League rules, accusations launched against the club before those made against either the Blues or Forest. Since then, Everton have been charged twice, punished twice and have lodged one successful appeal against the sanctions handed down for breaches of profit and sustainability regulations. The eight points of deductions that have followed plunged the club in a relegation fight it has only just escaped.

Forest have also been charged, had their case heard and received a points deduction of their own in the same period. That club’s appeal against its four-point deduction, and the Blues' challenge to its second reduction, are both to be heard before the end of the season.
