Stuart Peace has made a surprising prediction as to which team will be able to halt Manchester City's run of Premier League dominance this season.
Despite spending much of the campaign chasing a resurgent Arsenal, Pep Guardiola's side embarked on an unstoppable run towards the end of the campaign.
Suffering just two league defeats from February until the end of the season, City comfortably retook their place atop the league table whilst also capturing the Champions League for the first time in their history.
However, despite previously serving both a player and manager at the club, Pearce revealed that he he does not believe that City will make English football history by winning their fourth consecutive top flight title this year.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Pearce defied the bookies by naming an unlikely contender to the Citizens' crown.
'To be honest with you, I think [Newcastle] are going to win the league this year.' Pearce said.
'I’m going to stick my neck out, I think Newcastle with the recruitment they’ve done and how things are.
'I’ve been up there a couple times in the last year and the place is absolutely rocking.
Eddie Howe's side got off to a dream start to their campaign with a 5-1 win over Aston Villa last week and Pearce added that the Magpies' visit to the Etihad on Saturday could be an early test of their title contendership.
'I think if they keep everyone fit and have a good run at it and I think this game on Saturday evening could be a good indicator about whether they have got credentials.'
