Everton loanee Jack Harrison came back to haunt former club Manchester City a fright by opening the scoring against them on Wednesday night.
Harrison, who was a City player for three years, broke the deadlock in the 29th minute of the Citizens' first clash since they won the Club World Cup out in Saudi Arabia.
The 27-year-old slotted the ball past Ederson from close range as he met Dwight McNeil's low cross from the left after Everton won the ball on the edge of the City box.
The champions came roaring back in the second half, turning the match on its head thanks to goals by Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez and Phil Foden to secure a 3-1 win.
However, the opener will be a moment of vindication for Harrison, who was never given a chance for City.
After four separate loan spells, with Middlesbrough once and Leeds on three occasions — Harrison joined the latter in 2021 and has built a stable career in the top flight.
Following Leeds' relegation from the Premier League last season, Harrison secured a loan move to the Toffees in the summer.
Everton endured a difficult start to the campaign, which has seen them succumb to a ten-point deduction but they've undergone a revival in recent weeks, with Harrison part of it.
Claiming the scalp of last season's treble winners seems a bit beyond them with Foden's rasping effort from distance and a penalty from Alvarez seeing City go 2-1 up. Silva then secured the win with a chipped effort after Jordan Pickford's poor clearance rebounded off Jarrad Branthwaite and into the path of the Portuguese.
But Everton going toe to toe with City shows how far they've come in recent weeks.
