Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has launched an attack on Arsenal by claiming he doesn't think the club have acted properly in the aftermath of some questionable refereeing decisions. It came following a tense match between the Gunners and Newcastle over the weekend.
A challenge fromKai Havertz sparked the game into life as VAR checked for a possible red card but decided against sending him off. The Magpies had a brush with the video reviews for themselves as Bruno Guimaraes lunged into a challenge with his forearm to the head of Jorginho, but no action was taken.
Then came the check that truly divided opinion as Newcastle scored the opening goal, with Anthony Gordon tapping the ball into an empty net. However, there were three separate incidents to be analysed, which included the ball potentially going out of play, a possible foul and an offside shout.
In the end, none of them could be proven and the goal stood, which proved to be the winner come the end of the match. It was a decision that angered Mikel Arteta as he told Sky Sports: «It's a disgrace. It's embarrassing. That's how I feel and that's how everybody feels in that [dressing] room. You cannot imagine the amount of messages we've got saying this cannot continue. It's embarrassing. I'm sorry, embarrassing.»
Those words were later backed up by a club statement that questioned the standard of the referees and match officials in the Premier League. It made for interesting discussion surrounding other teams in the division and how they reacted towards decisions going against them.
