One of the faces of Xavi’s Barcelona at just 19 years of age, Gavi has become an integral member of the first-team setup at the Catalan club since bursting onto the scenes in 2021.
A product of the club’s La Masia academy, Gavi lives and breathes Barcelona and gives everything for the team when on the pitch, which is what endears him to the Culers.
The Spanish international, known to be shy off the pitch, recently sat down for a lengthy interview with La Vanguardia, during which he discussed several aspects of his career at Barça and his teammates.
The Beginnings…
Gavi joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy back when he was 11 years old, moving from Seville. Looking back at his early days at the club, the teenager admitted that the switch was a daunting one for him, saying:
“I remember that two months before I told my parents that I didn’t want to come, that I was afraid of coming across anything. Today I thank my parents, they were the first ones to make it clear that they had to bring me here.”
“I was very young and I didn’t want to leave my town, to be separated from my friends. It was a total change of life.”
But, the youngster admitted that La Masia ended up becoming his home, as he said: “I’ve spent all my childhood here, almost as long as I’ve been aware of it, it’s everything to me.”
After arriving, Gavi could not play for six months with the youth teams due to FIFA sanctions on Barcelona. The youngster revealed that it was a difficult phase for him as he always wanted to play and as such went and joined the futsal team at his local school during that time.
