Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill believes that a home Euros in 2028 will be TEN times bigger and better for the country than the Euro 2016 Finals which were savoured by the Green and White Army.
On Tuesday, UEFA will make it official that the UK/Ireland bid to stage Euro 2028 has been successful, and that will mean the third-biggest sporting event on the planet behind the World Cup and the Olympics is coming to Northern Ireland, with the still-to-be-built GAA stadium Casement Park set to stage several matches.
Knowing that a large number of Northern Ireland fans would prefer if the games were not going to be at Casement, O’Neill insisted this week that, due to its 34,500 capacity and Windsor Park only having 18,500, the west Belfast venue was the only show in town.
Northern Ireland, like other co-hosts England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland, are expected to be in the qualifying process for the Finals, though there are suggestions two spots for hosts will be available if they don’t qualify as of right.
O’Neill’s Irish FA contract takes him up to the 2028 Finals, and he is excited by the prospect of managing his country in the tournament having experienced great joy leading the nation to Euro 2016 in France.
