Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill cut a frustrated figure yet again after another 1-0 defeat in a game which featured a red card to midfielder Shea Charles and further protests at Casement Park’s role as one of the Euro 2028 venues.
After voicing their opposition to Casement during Saturday’s win over San Marino, there were more chants and banners in opposition to the unbuilt west Belfast GAA stadium staging games in the European Championships. The 3-0 victory over San Marino ended Northern Ireland’s five-game losing streak but it proved only a temporary reprieve as O’Neill’s side suffered five 1-0 Euro 2024 qualifying defeats in eight games.

Adam Cerin’s fifth-minute free-kick proved decisive and the fans’ frustrations deepened when Charles, who had been booked for dissent following the awarding of the set-piece, saw red for a lunge on Andraz Sporar just before the hour.
Northern Ireland were fuming at referee Istvan Kovacs’ decision to award the free kick after Jamal Lewis barely clipped Benjamin Sesko on the edge of the box.
