AC Milan have released a statement condemning "every form of violence" after a Paris Saint-Germain supporter suffered serious injuries on Monday night.
Italian police confirmed on Tuesday that a man was stabbed amid clashes between both sets of fans in Milan before the Champions League match. The 34-year-old victim was stabbed twice in the leg and later taken to Milan's Policlinico hospital for treatment.
According to Reuters, the trouble started after a group of around 50 Milan fans clashed with visiting PSG supporters at around midnight in the city's canal district. And via social media, the hosts addressed the issue on Tuesday afternoon.
"AC Milan condemns every form of violence: football for us is passion, not hate," read the post, uploaded in three different languages. "Sport is supposed to unite, not divide."
Two police officers were also reportedly injured after officers charged the French fans with batons in a bid to restore order. The game at the San Siro is scheduled to kick-off at 8pm, and there has been no suggestion from UEFA that the trouble will have an impact on the game going ahead.
Neither the authority or PSG have, as of yet, released a statement on the incident. The French champions did upload several posts on Tuesday morning, but all of them relating to previews of the match.
However, it is not the first such incident to take place in Milan in Europe this season. A Newcastle United supporter was stabbed in the city in September before the Premier League club played there in the Champions League.
