Steven Davis has taken over at Rangers on an interim basis
Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill says the common sense approach of Steven Davis and being ‘emotionally well balanced’ will help him in his new role as interim boss at Rangers.
O’Neill also made the point that should midfielder Davis, who has been rehabilitating from a serious injury, be in charge at Ibrox longer than expected it would be impossible for him to be a player as well as a manager at the Glasgow club.
Following the sacking of Michael Beale on Sunday, the Rangers board turned to the experienced Davis, who will be at the helm until a new more long term boss is appointed.
As manager and captain of the Northern Ireland side, O’Neill and Davis have had a close friendship for over a decade. O’Neill says he will be on call for his skipper should he need advice and will be an interested spectator watching Rangers under new management in Cyprus against Aris Limassol in the Europa League on Thursday.
On a new chapter in the career of the 38-year-old, O’Neill said: “I think it shows you the nature of football at this moment in time. It’s great for Steven and shows the high regard he is held in at the club.
“They have turned to him in this situation after making the decision on their manager Michael Beale and I have messaged him to wish him all the best.
“I told him if he needed any help or guidance not to be afraid to pick up the phone, but he will have his own thoughts and hasn’t had much time with the players, particularly with the travel involved going to Cyprus.
“It’s never an easy situation and playing in Europe away from home adds to it all.
