David Healy has backed his former Rangers team-mate Steven Davis to make ‘a significant contribution’ in his new role as interim manager at Ibrox insisting everyone at the club will have total respect for the Northern Ireland captain.
On Sunday night it was announced that Davis would take charge of Rangers on a temporary basis following the sacking of manager Michael Beale after a poor start to the season.
The 38-year-old midfielder said it was an opportunity he couldn’t turn down and is relishing leading the team against Aril Limassol in Cyprus in the Europa League on Thursday prior to a league game at the weekend at Stephen Robinson’s high-flying St Mirren.
Linfield boss Healy won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers alongside Davis and played with him at Fulham as well as for Northern Ireland when the pair enjoyed a fabulous understanding.
Healy believes that Davis has the capability and calmness to deliver as interim manager declaring that the players will be right behind him.
“Davo is a brilliant lad and a long-term friend. I played with him at club level and at international level and he has that cool, calm persona that you need at a club the size and stature of Rangers,” said Northern Ireland’s record goalscorer.
“You may be fearful for others going into this situation but Steven has been there, seen it and done it and understands the football club like few others and no doubt with his personality and capabilities he is more than capable of making a significant contribution to the team whether it is short-term, medium-term or long-term.
