Bobby Burns underwent pitchside treatment as the game went on
Glentoran have expressed their disgust at the treatment of their injured player Bobby Burns during the Premiership game at Crusaders last Saturday and stressed the need for a full investigation to ensure the incident is not repeated.
Approaching the hour mark, Burns collided with an advertising hoarding behind one of the goals during the sides’ 1-1 draw in north Belfast.
He lay motionless and was soon attended to by medical support staff and Crusaders’ club doctor, David McCracken and physio Cathal O’Kane, while the game continued.
Burns lay there for 20 minutes, shielded by medical staff.
Early fears were that the 24-year-old had sustained a broken neck, but it was confirmed he suffered a double fracture of the jaw.
An ambulance arrived, Burns was stretchered off behind the goals and was taken to hospital for surgery.
Glentoran feel that play should have been stopped and they have issued a statement outlining their concerns.
The club said: “Following on from the serious injury to Bobby Burns at Seaview on Saturday 28th October, Glentoran Chairman Colin Jess has confirmed that the club is actively pursuing a full and transparent investigation into the events immediately after Bobby collided with the advertising boards at the Shore Road end of the ground.
“While Bobby has undergone an operation and is now recovering, for some time his condition was considered extremely serious. However no consideration was given to his safety or dignity, nor the potential of further injury from the game continuing.
