Graeme Souness has two reasons why ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson wants Saudi Arabia exit

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes Jordan Henderson is so keen to leave Saudi Arabia because of both on and off-field matters.

Henderson left Anfield in the summer under a cloud. The former Reds captain was criticised for joining Al Ettifaq in the Middle East because of the country's human rights record, particularly surrounding the LGBTQ+ community which the 33-year-old had campaigned heavily in support of.

Defending his decision to move to the Saudi Pro League, Henderson claimed he wanted to try and change perceptions from within but this argument was not supported by many. Since then, the midfielder has made 19 appearances for his new club and he has retained his spot in the England national team.

However, recent reports have suggested Henderson has had enough of Saudi and wishes to move back to Europe amid a dip in form. A return to the Premier League, as well as switches to Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Juventus have all been suggested but it is understood Al Ettifaq are in no mood to sell their captain.

Responding to the reports on talkSPORT, Souness gave his theory as to why Henderson wants to leave. He explained: "He would have known about the climate in Saudi Arabia, and known he was going to a much inferior league given the Premier League is best one out there.

"I would imagine if they were top of the league and he was being well received as player they thought they were getting, we would not be talking about this. I think it is a combination of him having a miserable time, and because the club has underachieved."

Al-Ettifaq sit eighth in the Saudi Pro League, a whopping 28 points behind leaders Al Hilal.
