Lee Carsley has challenged Harvey Elliott to win a promotion to the England senior squad ahead of next summer’s European Championships in Germany.
The Liverpool midfielder was a squad player for England Under-21s as they won their own corresponding Euros this summer, and has since cemented his place as first-choice in Carsley’s midfield. On the scoresheet for the young Lions in their 3-0 victory away at Serbia on Saturday, the 20-year-old has three goals and two assists from his last three international appearances.
Cole Palmer and Rico Lewis were both promoted from the Under-21s to Gareth Southgate’s squad for the November international break following injuries elsewhere. And Carsley has revealed Elliott’s reaction to not getting such a call-up himself, before declaring ‘the ball is in his court’ to earn senior selection.
“He’s reacted great. The Euros is in the summer, there’s still a massive part of the season left,” he told reporters. “The ball is massively in their (his Under-21s players) court. Their club form will take care of selection.
