Fans were left stunned after Jose Mourinho left one key name out of his all-time greatest XI of players he has managed.
The Special One has enjoyed a glittering managerial career comprising two spells as Chelsea boss and stints at Porto, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Tottenham.
Mourinho, who is currently head coach at Serie A side Roma, was handed the task of naming his all-time XI from players he had worked with throughout his career on The Obi One podcast, run by his former Blues midfielder John Obi Mikel.
While the majority of his choices were universally accepted, one glaring omission sent fans into a frenzy.
No less than eight former Chelsea stars were selected in Mourinho’s team with unsurprising selections for John Terry, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Eden Hazard.
Petr Cech, Ricardo Carvalho and Claude Makelele were also chosen but it was the inclusion of William Gallas at left back over Ashley Cole that left fans bemused.
Cole is widely regarded as the best left-back England has ever produced and played a key role in the Blues lifting the Premier League title in 2010 and the Champions League in 2012.
Meanwhile, Gallas often filled in at left-back despite a preference to operate at centre-back.
Fans took to social media reacting to Cole’s snub, leaving many believing Mourinho’s decision was wide of the mark.
One fan wrote: “Gallas over Ashley Cole is mad.”
A second added: “Why is Gallas there instead of Ashley Cole?”
Another fan responded: “I disagree with the LB choice. I believe Ashley Cole should be that guy.”
A fourth added: “No Ashley Cole wow Jose I’m almost speechless that should have been the least debated selection
A final fan wrote: “Gallas over Cole is absolutely mental!”
