Henderson's £12m move to Al-Ettifaq will be confirmed in the next 24 hours
Jordan Henderson's big-money move to Saudi Arabia will be confirmed in the next 24 hours after the Liverpool captain travelled to meet his new team-mates in Croatia this morning.
Henderson has been offered a staggering £700,000-a-week deal to link up with former Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq, who are on a camp in Croatia. The Reds will receive a transfer fee of around £12million.
The 33-year-old flew to Croatia to complete formalities on Wednesday and the move is expected to be officially confirmed by both clubs in the next day.
It ends a 12-year stay at Anfield for Henderson, who has been criticised by LGBTQ+ organisations for his move to the Saudi Pro League club, given the country’s stance on homosexuality and human rights record.
Gerrard's side were beaten 1-0 by Lokomotiva Zagreb in their first game of the Croatia camp, with the new boss still looking for his first win in his post after losing two of his opening three games in charge. They play Skopje outfit FK Rabotnicki on Thursday.
Unlike Saudi Arabia's top four clubs, Al-Ettifaq do not have financial backing from the Public Investment Fund, and so the £12m deal will be through a structured timeline of payment.
Henderson did not take the decision lightly and held talks with Jurgen Klopp over his gametime this season after a summer revamp in midfield areas, and the Englishman also spoke to Gareth Southgate about how a potential move could impact his minutes for the national team.
The Reds will now turn attention to signing Southampton defensive midfielder Romeo Lavia. Liverpool had a bid of £35m plus add-ons rejected on Tuesday, with the Championship club holding out for a fee of £50m. Klopp’s side are expected to make an improved offer.
