CONTINUOUS can win the final Classic of the season, the (2.40pm) Betfred St Leger Stakes (British Champions Series) (No Geldings) (3.35pm) at Doncasterat on Saturday afternoon.
While the Ballydoyle maestro was denied a seventh victory in last week’s Irish St Leger when last year’s Doncaster Classic hero Eldar Eldarov beat the returning Kyprios, this week the Irish handler is likely to be plundering another Group One prize in Britain.
A winner of his two juvenile starts, including a Group Three contest over a mile at Saint-Cloud this time last year, the son of Heart’s Cry out of a Galileo mare has been something of a slow burner in his Classic campaign. He ran a very good race to be third to The Foxes on his seasonal return in the Group Two Dante Stakes at York in May. But his first Classic bid didn’t go to plan when eighth in the Qatar Prix Du Jockey Club (French Derby) at Chantilly the following month. But stepped up in trip to 1m4f he has improved again to be second to the high-class King Of Steel – admittedly three-and-a-half lengths adrift – in the Group Two King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Continuous finally got his head back in front, when easily beating Castle Way and the reopposing and Gregory by three-and-three-quarters-of-a-length and more in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York last month. That Group Two contest has been an informative guide to the St Leger and is regarded as one of the premier – if not the best – trial for the oldest and longest Classic. Although Logician – four years ago – was the last to win at York and follow up on Town Moor, the likes of Bob’s Return (1993), O’Brien’s Milan – the trainer’s first Classic winner in 2001; Rule Of Law (2004) and Lucarno (2007) all showed it is possible
