‘How can you claim that?’ Aussie stars bicker over who really scored first goal in Soccer Ashes battle

Mitchell Duke and Harry Souttar bickered like an old couple as they couldn’t decide who truly scored the Socceroos’ opener in their 2-0 win over New Zealand.

The Aussies fired home in the 13th minute when Mitchell Duke thumped a half-volley into the net, but Harry Souttar then wheeled off in celebration claiming he had scored as Duke looked stunned.

Replays then showed the ball took a slightly change in trajectory, proving Duke’s strike took the slightest of deflections from the towering defender.

However, Duke was officially credited with the goal but it was then overturned towards the end of the half as it was given to Souttar.

But after the game, it was confirmed by match officials that it was indeed Duke who had scored first.

However, Souttar remained adamant it was he who got the opening goal and not his teammate, who “wasn’t very happy”.

“I think we’ll be debating that one for quite a while until it gets resolved, but I’m just going to plead my case,” Souttar said.

The Leicester City man added: “From a distance, it probably looks like his goal but if you watch the replay fully carefully, the trajectory of the ball moves.”

Duke then joined Souttar for the post-game interviews, to which the latter said: “They’ve (reporters) said they put it as your goal on the match sheet, but they were all agreeing that maybe it was my goal?”

However, the striker took a rather diplomatic view on the matter and insisted it’s the result that matters more than the name on the scoresheet.
