In comments captured by L’Équipe, Lyon centre-back Jake O’Brien has spoke about the scepticism of some people surrounding his transfer to OL.
O’Brien arrived at the Groupama Stadium as an unknown quantity after completing his €1m move from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window. In the season before making his switch to OL, the Ireland U21 international had an impressive spell on loan at Lyon’s sister club RWD Molenbeek in Belgium. This success prompted his move to OL and the 22-year-old has not looked back since.
Despite his impressive start at OL, the former Crystal Palace defender has spoken about the scepticism of his move to Lyon, “I understood people’s doubts at the beginning because I am relatively unknown. It motivates me to prove that I’m good enough to play, even though I have a lot to learn.”
The Lyon defender has been one of their most pivotal players this season and has played a major part in their recent turnaround in form which has eased the fears of a possible relegation and left them dreaming of a Coupe de France final. At one stage of the season, he was even the Ligue 1 club’s top goalscorer O’Brien has shown his defensive qualities in a partnership and a three at the heart of the defence. His impressive form even caught the eye of Premier League clubs with Everton showing an interest in signing the former Molenbeek loanee in January.
