Everton's 4-0 thrashing of Nottingham Forest prompted one of the most outrageous moments in the late Brian Clough's colourful career when he planted a big kiss on stunned interviewer Gary Newbon in front of a national television audience of millions.
The marvellous but maverick manager, who guided provincial East Midlands outfits Derby County and Nottingham Forest to the first League Championships in their respective histories while also steering the latter to a brace of European Cups, was going through a sticky patch 30 years ago. The defeat to the Blues on April 4, 1990, was the third of four on the bounce for Forest in what proved to be an eight-game winless run.
Recalling the incident on YouTube, Newbon spoke of the magnetic effect that the charismatic yet unpredictable Clough had on viewers. He said: “Of the many thousands of people I've interviewed over the years I think the most fascinating, even including people like Muhammad Ali and Carl Lewis, people like that, the international names, was Brian Clough.
“He really was quite an amazing character. He was the sort of guy, when someone used to switch a television on, in a crowded room full of football fans, if he came on there would be absolute silence.
“Everyone wondered what outrageous phrase he'd come up with.”
