It has been an aspect of the modern rivalry between Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona, that hostilities between the two sides have predominantly been played out behind the scenes and through biting press releases , and far away from their famous stadiums.
Laporta has been no stranger to discussing his side’s French rivals since becoming president of Barcelona in March 2021, with the president pointing towards PSG as being partly responsible for the financial difficulties that have seen the club struggle in recent years .
In a club statement in 2022, Laporta blamed Barcelona’s financial mismanagement under the previous regime on a desire to keep pace with the spending of PSG and Manchester City, suggesting that this was an “ unsustainable ” mistake.
Despite the vast riches that PSG can afford, and which they have used frequently to Barcelona’s detriment, stealing Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Ousmane Dembélé from the 27-time Spanish champions, Laporta has suggested that he would not swap any of his players for one of his rivals.
Speaking ahead of the game between the two sides tonight, Laporta stated “ I wouldn’t change any of our players for any other player .” A message perhaps to Kylian Mbappé, who is strongly linked with Barcelona’s arch-rivals Real Madrid or maybe even to Dembélé who left last summer.
