Ronaldinho was in attendance as Paris Saint-Germain hosted Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, a contest that would see two of his former clubs clash in the latest iteration of a hotly contested and modern rivalry.
The former Brazilian international arrived in Paris at the start of his European career in 2001 when the club were far removed from their now expensive status as one of the richest clubs in Europe.
It was a stepping stone for the star, a time to assimilate from Brazilian football into the European game, and while he only won the Intertoto Cup with Les Parisiens , he left the Parc des Princes in 2003 a World Cup winner with Brazil.
A more glittering move to Barcelona awaited him and while he won almost all that could be won in Europe away from the French capital, it was a city, a club, and a stadium that forever held his heart.
On his Instagram, Ronaldinho posted a message thanking the teams for a special night, “ For some it’s just a game, for others just a result… but for me it’s part of my football history gathered in the same place, in my favourite place! The pitch, the perfect lawn, the sounds of the stands, where everything makes more sense. ”
