Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes believes Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim would be a success at Liverpool should he be appointed as Jurgen Klopp’s successor.
The Echo understands that a verbal agreement between Amorim and Liverpool has in fact not taken place, despite contrary reports in Germany on Tuesday. The club are continuing to assess several manager options after initial frontrunner Xabi Alonso revealed his decision to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.
Amorim guided Sporting to their first title for 19 years in 2021 and the club’s win over rivals Benfica at the weekend puts them comfortable favourites for the crown this time around. The 39-year-old’s possession-based tactics and transfer successes have grabbed the admiration of many in Portugal and beyond.

Fernandes is one of those who has been impressed by his work. The former Sporting midfielder hopes Amorim stays in Lisbon given his success with the club but admits that the manager has the capability to soar at Liverpool.
Speaking to Portuguese media last month, the United skipper said: "If he [Amorim] really takes the next step – I hope he stays at Sporting – but if he takes the next step, I think all the qualities are there to be able to succeed in English, French, or Spanish football.
"Obviously, we know that the Premier League is probably the most desired. The qualities [to succeed in England] are there and he has everything to take the next step, in my opinion. But it will depend on the clubs, the directors, whether they want to pay Sporting's release clause or not."
