Galway United FC has apologised after posting an image of a player holding a STOP sign with the song ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’, despite him killing a father of two in a three-car collision.
The League of Ireland Premier Division side shared the image of midfielder Ed McCarthy on social media ahead of their opening game of the season against St Patrick’s Athletic on Friday.
The image also had a driver golf club in the background.
The post, accompanied by Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s hit song, was later deleted amid an online backlash.
Murder on the Dancefloor has returned to the charts for the first time since its release in 2003 after it was used in the closing scene of the film Saltburn, starring Irish actor Barry Keoghan.
In a statement, Galway said: “Galway United wish to advise that there was no offence intended by a recent social media post issued by the club and would like to unreservedly apologise for any hurt or distress that the post may have caused.”
Galway United posted on Instagram, but subsequently deleted the post.
McCarthy (22) was handed a two-year suspended prison sentence and banned from driving for seven years in November 2020 after pleading guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Polish national Andrezej Obalek.
