James Doyle can't wait to be reunited with sprint star Shaquille in this Saturday's Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock Park.
Julie Camacho's hot favourite Shaquille – who is a best-priced 5-6 market leader with Coral – is on course for Saturday's Group One feature on Merseyside and Doyle will be back in the saddle this time. Doyle partnered the Charm Spirit colt on his first two starts of of this season, winning a Newmarket handicap before taking the Listed Carnarvon Stakes at Newbury. The three-year-old has since gone on to land back-to-back Group One contests since with Doyle's commitments to his main employer, Godolphin, meaning he couldn't carry on the partnership. Oisin Murphy was in the saddle when Shaquille won the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot, while Rossa Ryan partnered him when he beat his elders in the July Cup at Newmarket.
On both occasions Shaquille missed the break, before showing supreme ability to get back up and beat his rivals fairly comfortably both in Berkshire and at Headquarters. With no Godolphin commitments on Saturday on Merseyside Doyle can resume his partnership with Shaquille, who pleased in a stalls session at Camacho's North Yorkshire base last month. Specialist horsemen Craig and Jake Witherford will both be on hand at Haydock to assist as a stalls rug will be used. And Doyle believes Shaquille can show he is the top six-furlong horse of the season again.
The leading rider told a press call organised by QIPCO British Champions Series: "I went to sit on him during York week and we just popped him in the stalls on the Malton gallops there It was nice to sit on him at home, the guys have all said he's completely different at home which was kind of hard to imagine.
