Jamie Carragher believes Roberto De Zerbi could be Jurgen Klopp's successor at Liverpool - with the Reds' newly-appointed sporting director Richard Hughes a long-time admirer of the Italian.
De Zerbi has been linked with the soon-to-be-vacant managerial post since January, alongside Bayer Leverkusen's Xabi Alonso and Sporting CP's Ruben Amorim.
However, after Alonso announced his intention to stay with the recently-crowned Bundesliga champions for next season at least and on Monday afternoon it was reported that Ruben Amorim is 'unlikely' to be Liverpool's preferred choice to succeed Klopp, the Italian's name has entered the conversation once more.

And legendary Liverpool defender Carragher believes the club's recently-appointed sporting director, Hughes, who will officially begin work at Anfield on June 1, could be eyeing a swoop for De Zerbi, whom he tried to lure to Bournemouth in 2022 but was ultimately unsuccessful in doing so due to a change of ownership at the club.
Posting to X on Monday, Carragher wrote: "Richard Hughes wanted De Zerbi at Bournemouth, so he must be the favourite if this is true. [David] Ornstein doesn’t get much wrong tbf!"
De Zerbi succeeded Graham Potter at Brighton in September 2022 and guided the Seagulls to Europa League qualification and an FA Cup semi-final during his first season at the club. But when asked about committing his future to the club, last month the Italian insisted he would only do so once he and the club's owner, Tony Bloom, were on the same page.
