Jordan Pickford will be hoping to bring the England national team mentality back to Everton after the Three Lions came from behind to defeat holders Italy 3-1 at Wembley and qualify for the 2024 European Championships.
England fell behind after 15 minutes when Atalanta’s Gianluca Scamacca – who played for David Moyes’ West Ham United last season – fired the ball into the roof of Pickford’s net but captain Harry Kane equalised from the penalty spot on 32 minutes before Marcus Rashford put them ahead on 57 minutes and Kane scored again on 77 minutes to seal victory.
Under Sean Dyche, Everton have won seven of the 10 Premier League games they scored first in and have drawn the other three to remain undefeated. However, they are still yet to win a game in the competition in which their opponents scored first with three draws and 12 defeats.
The only time the Blues have come from behind to triumph with Dyche at the helm was when they edged out League Two Doncaster Rovers 2-1 in the Carabao Cup on August 30. Pickford will therefore be attempting to instil some of the resilience shown by Gareth Southgate’s side as when asked if he feared England would lose after Italy netted first he said: “No, we know it’s always going to be tough against a top nation but those are the challenges we’ve got to overcome to become the best. It’s never going to be simple and easy, you’re always going to have challenges and when you go one-nil down it’s how you reset as a team.
“We had to stay patient and keep doing what we’d planned to do throughout the week and the goals would come. The lads up top are ruthless.”
