Jose Mourinho is now unemployed and free to be hired once more following his sacking by Roma, which will come as little surprise to those who follow Italian football.
The 60-year-old was watching from the stands in Sunday’s defeat to Milan after receiving a second successive red card in last week’s Coppa Italia defeat to fierce rivals Lazio. After the match he likened himself to Harry Potter, saying he was "raising" expectation levels of the club.
Under him, Roma won the inaugural Europa Conference League trophy in 2022 before reaching the Europa League final a year later. Despite their European ventures, Roma have failed to break into the top four of Serie A and have gone backwards since coming close to Champions League qualification in the Europa League final.

Owners Dan and Ryan Friedkin said in a club statement on Tuesday: “We would like to thank Jose on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club. We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club. We wish Jose and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”
Questions will now be posed about what is next for Mourinho. His second spell at Chelsea ended in abject performance on the pitch while his departure from United was explosive.
Interestingly, at both clubs and at Roma, he managed to lift trophies in the first few seasons before proceedings went south. The same might have happened at Tottenham if he had not been sacked ahead of the 2021 League Cup final.
Sky Bet reckons his most likely next destination is Newcastle.
